Human Understanding of Afflictions vs. Biblical Reality

Modern secular frameworks view human struggle through a purely material or psychological lens, missing the deeper spiritual dynamics at play. When human understanding is weighed against biblical reality, the contrast is stark—particularly regarding the root, purpose, and ultimate resolution of addiction and suffering.

1. Addiction: Spiritual Warfare and Divine Purpose

Addiction is far more than physical sickness or moral failure. Scripturally, it is primarily a spiritual conflict—a manifestation of demonic oppression akin to a Nephilim spirit overcoming its human target. The sheer intensity of addiction mirrors the immense power associated with these ancient spiritual forces.

Yet, within the biblical paradigm, this struggle serves an unexpected purpose. God remains in absolute control over every affliction. He permits such intense trials to dismantle human pride and self-reliance, driving the soul into deep humility. This God-ordained brokenness becomes the doorway to true spiritual growth and lasting freedom. As King David acknowledged in his suffering:

“It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” — Psalm 119:71

2. The 12-Step Framework

The 12-Step program remains the world’s most widely recognized recovery model. Its first five steps offer undeniable value, creating a structured path for rigorous self-examination, honesty, and the confession of hidden faults, lies, and hypocrisy.

However, steps 6 through 12 fall short of providing a complete solution. Lacking biblical grounding, they fail to offer genuine spiritual transcendence. By confining individuals to a horizontal, purely human level of reality, these steps leave many trapped in cycles of relapse.

Crucially, the 12-Step model distorts human identity. Rather than offering complete renewal, it replaces a false self with a permanent badge of defect—labeling the individual as a “lifetime alcoholic.” Scripturally, this is a flawed identity.

The true self that emerges through spiritual rebirth is not a perpetually broken addict, not a victim, but a powerful, free, and co-creative new creation in God!

3. Transcendence Through God’s Harvest Process

For those seeking genuine freedom and carrying a spirit of high ideals, human protocols and secular methodologies are inherently limited. Ultimate liberation is found not in human systems, but in entering God’s Harvest process—a divine framework that transcends worldly methods.

God utilizes the experience of affliction to break pride, refine the spirit, and align human desire with heavenly reality.Allowed under His sovereignty, addiction finds its resolution when His timing is fulfilled, human pride is erased, and His renewing power brings true spiritual transformation.
